“Sometimes money is tight, especially in this economy, but thank God there are agencies that help families like mine,” said Maria, who receives food from North Fulton Community Charities, a partner agency of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Maria’s husband works full time as a landscaper. “With his income, we have to pay rent, bills and other costs like school supplies,” she said. Four of her children can count on school meals, but when they’re home during the summer, it can be more challenging.
Thankfully, they can turn to the food pantry at North Fulton Community Charities. “The pantry helps me with food and diapers. The food we receive is for all of my family, including my mother who lives with us. It’s especially helpful when the kids are on summer break.” Maria says without the pantry, it would be more difficult for her family. “The food we get is vital, especially for my children who are still growing.” She is grateful for those who support the pantry and the Food Bank. “Not everyone does that,” she said. “I thank you for what you do to help needy families.”
In addition to working with partner agencies to provide healthy meals this summer, the Food Bank also helps the Georgia Food Bank Association, the Georgia Department of Education and others spread the word about programs that distributed 9.8 million meals last summer. Families that could benefit can text FoodGA to 877-877 for a list of locations providing summer meals.
