Customers of Carver Neighborhood Market in South Atlanta were treated to a special surprise when Celebrity Chef G Garvin recently dropped by with peach cobbler, kale salad, jambalaya, chicken and more!
In partnership with Georgia Food Oasis-Atlanta, Carver Market launched 2-for-1 SNAP Thursdays in early February, giving patrons the opportunity to receive 2-for-1 on all fresh produce when paying with their SNAP/EBT cards. Chef Garvin offered to host an in-store food demo to show customers how easy it is to prepare meals with the fresh food available at the market.
In conjunction with the 2-for-1 SNAP produce promotion, Georgia Food Oasis-Atlanta has secured other volunteers to come in and conduct future food demos during high traffic times in the morning and evening to encourage patrons to purchase produce. Carver Market has often sweetened the deal by offering 25% discounts on produce to all other customers.
The Market opened its doors in May 2015 when Focused Community Strategies (FCS) Ministries made the decision to convert its thrift store into a small community grocery store. The store serves a low income community where it plays a crucial role in providing access to food in general, and fresh fruits and vegetables in particular. Carver Market’s mission is not to diagnose a food desert, but to create a Food Oasis. Along with the adjoining FCS ventures, Community Grounds Coffee Shop and South Atlanta Bike Shop, it provides access to food, jobs and relationships for the patrons of South Atlanta and surrounding neighborhoods.
FCS Ministries is a long-term Food Bank Partner Agency that also hosts a food co-op and other food access programs in South Atlanta.
