On Saturday, May 11, you can do your part to help Stamp Out Hunger in your community by supporting the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive. Atlanta-area letter carriers will join those in more than 10,000 communities across the country in the largest single one-day Food Drive in the nation.
Donating to the Food Drive is easy. Just leave your non-perishable food items in a bag or box near your mailbox prior to the arrival of your letter carrier. They will collect the food during their regular mail delivery and it will be transported to local food banks and food pantries including the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Preferred food items are those that are high in protein such as canned tuna, canned soup, salmon, beans and peanut butter. Canned fruits and vegetables, whole grain/low sugar cereals, macaroni and cheese dinners and 100% fruit juice also top the list of most needed items.
Look for donation bags featuring the Family Circus cartoon characters in your mailbox this week if you haven’t received one already. Use these bags, or your own bags or boxes, to make donating easy and convenient. With the changing face of hunger in America, the people you help through your donations may very well be your friends, relatives, neighbors or co-workers.
